Nick Mulvey - “The RIver Lea” (SoundCloud, 2011)

Today, I re-discovered the awesomeness of Portico Quartet, the British jazz group, after hearing their new track “Ruins.” But it’s a different group than the one that released Isla in 2009 (a gem, btw), as percussionist Nick Mulvey departed some time ago to embark on a solo career.

So I looked him up to see if he’s put anything out and found his SoundCloud and I’ve been playing all five tracks he’s posted on repeat ever since. They’re all beautiful, somber, acoustic numbers in the style of Nick Drake and Jose Gonzalez, perfect for the onset of those chilly December evenings. They might be demos, rough drafts, or the finished thing, but it doesn’t matter to me - they hit the spot.

I can’t find any information on official releases, but I’m looking forward to whatever he might put out.
